Jeffco’s school board approved a contract appointing Dr. Robert Stein as interim superintendent at a June 18 special meeting, formalizing the district’s summer leadership handoff ahead of Superintendent Tracy Dorland’s planned departure.

The contract sets Stein’s term from July 6, 2026, through June 30, 2027. It also says he will provide transition services June 22-25 without additional compensation and notes planned vacation July 6-10, the first week of his appointment.

The posted meeting record shows the motion carried, but it does not list a numeric vote tally.

The contract sets Stein’s gross annual salary at $300,000 and provides benefits generally aligned with the district’s 12-month licensed professional employees. It also includes 20 vacation days, health, dental and vision coverage, life insurance equal to his base salary, a $500 monthly automobile allowance and district-provided technology including a smartphone, smartwatch and laptop.

The agreement also says Stein is a PERA service retiree, which subjects him to a 140-day service limit in each calendar year covered by the contract. If the board unilaterally ends the contract before it expires, the agreement says Stein would be paid the remaining base salary due under the contract, but not additional benefits.

Board materials for the June 18 action tie the appointment to Dorland’s announced July 5 departure and say Stein will assume the superintendent’s duties starting July 6. The packet also says the board named Stein its sole finalist June 3 and waited through the required public-finalist period before making the appointment.

Jeffco’s superintendent search page still gives only a broad outline of what comes after the interim appointment. The page says the board is committed to a “transparent and inclusive process” to select the district’s next permanent leader and says a fuller timeline is “coming soon,” with community feedback opportunities promised in the months ahead.

The June 18 vote settles the district’s immediate leadership plan for the 2026-27 school year, while the public timeline for the permanent superintendent search remains incomplete on the district’s website.
