Arapahoe commissioners to consider training deputies for commercial vehicle inspections
The proposed agreement would require deputies to complete Colorado State Patrol training before conducting inspections.
Arapahoe County commissioners will consider an agreement Sept. 15 that would allow sheriff’s deputies to conduct commercial motor vehicle inspections in the county, where the Sheriff’s Office currently has no certified inspectors in its Traffic Safety Unit.
The Board of County Commissioners is scheduled to consider the memorandum of understanding at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 15. The county agenda lists the proposal as agenda item 26-422 and identifies Colorado State Patrol and county Public Safety Bureau representatives as presenters.
Promotions, transfers and retirements left the Sheriff’s Office without a currently certified inspector, the county’s board summary says. County staff recommend that commissioners authorize the sheriff to sign the agreement and pursue the required training and certifications.
Under the draft agreement, deputies would complete a Colorado State Patrol coaching and mentorship program before conducting inspections. They would inspect commercial vehicles on interstate, state and county highways within the Sheriff’s Office’s jurisdiction and follow North American uniform inspection procedures and Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance out-of-service criteria.
The draft says training is expected to have minimal cost and require little to no additional equipment. The Sept. 15 meeting is a scheduled study session, not a record of approval, and the draft agreement’s signature and approval fields are blank.
