Commerce City police report shows violent crime fell as some property offenses rose
A report scheduled for a Sept. 21 City Council presentation compares 2025 with 2024, showing motor-vehicle theft down 39.47% while burglary and vehicle break-ins increased.
Commerce City police reported a 5.6% decline in violent crime and a 39.47% decline in motor-vehicle theft in 2025 compared with 2024, while burglary, theft from motor vehicles, drug and narcotics violations, weapons violations and non-consensual sex offenses increased. The City Council is scheduled to receive the annual report Sept. 21.
The police presentation materials also report declines in aggravated assault, robbery and shoplifting. Burglary rose 5.61%, theft from motor vehicles rose 14.23%, drug and narcotics violations rose 23.08%, weapons violations rose 3.57% and non-consensual sex offenses rose 5.47%.
The department identified burglary, thefts from motor vehicles and drug and narcotics violations as categories it will focus on because they did not decline. The materials do not describe additional staffing, funding or specialized operations for those efforts.
For the four quarters from the third quarter of 2025 through the second quarter of 2026, the department’s supplemental data packet reports 2,843 total cases, 1,008 clearances and an overall clearance rate of 35.4%. It lists 236 stolen vehicles and 222 recovered vehicles, while noting that the recovered vehicles were not necessarily the same vehicles reported stolen.
The department changed from the TriTech records-management system to the Axon Records Management System in March 2026. The packet says some second-quarter data was compiled manually during that transition and may be less reliable.
The City Council agenda lists the annual crime report as an informational presentation scheduled for Sept. 21. It does not identify formal council action.
