Arapahoe County weighs extra pay for lieutenants covering open shifts
The proposed payments would be $425 or $850 for eligible shifts; commissioners also discussed testing the plan for one or two years.
Arapahoe County commissioners discussed a proposal Sept. 29 to pay sheriff’s lieutenants who cover open deputy or sergeant shifts, with payments of up to $850 per shift intended to help the office meet minimum staffing requirements.
Under the staff proposal, an actively working lieutenant could receive $425 for a shift lasting five to 10 hours or $850 for a shift longer than 10 hours, with a limit of one covered shift per pay period. The Board Summary Report describes the staffing rationale, and the draft policy outlines the proposed eligibility and payment rules.
During the Sept. 29 discussion, a commissioner suggested a one-year pilot. Another later proposed a one- or two-year trial with a defined spending limit. A Sheriff’s Office representative said the office believed it could manage the program within its existing budget and monitor spending.
The transcript does not make clear whether commissioners approved the pay plan or a pilot.
