If approved, the amendment would add AI data-protection terms to the city’s Axon agreement, with price and payment terms left for negotiation.

Commerce City Council is scheduled to consider an amendment Oct. 5 that would let the Police Department use Axon’s AI language-translation module and add data-protection terms for the company’s AI features.

Resolution 2026-125 is on the consent agenda in the final council agenda. Staff recommends approval, the council communication says.

If approved, the resolution would authorize the city manager to negotiate and finalize a first amendment to the city’s 2024 master services and purchasing agreement with Axon, which covers hardware and related cloud services. The manager would negotiate final details, including price and payment terms, and the amendment would need the city attorney’s approval as to form before execution, the resolution states.

The council communication describes the module as supporting police language translation and says the amendment would add data-protection terms for AI features, but does not specify which languages or police interactions the tool would cover or what protections would be added.

The communication lists $4.65 million as both the request/contract amount and the not-to-exceed amount, and $4.51 million as budgeted for 2024–2029. It does not clarify whether the $4.65 million is the amendment’s added cost or the total agreement amount after amendment.
