Englewood utility staff proposed replacing the declining rate for nonresidential water use above 400,000 gallons with a flat $4.30 per 1,000 gallons. The Water and Sewer Board tabled discussion of the proposal until its November meeting and approved no rate changes on Oct. 13.
The current rate for that usage is $2.64 per 1,000 gallons, compared with the city’s stated $4.30 cost to produce and deliver the same amount of water. Staff said the rate means high-volume users pay less than the cost of service, with other customers covering the difference, during the Oct. 13 Water and Sewer Board meeting.
The board introduced and seconded a motion to recommend the rate change alongside a new three-tier residential structure before tabling the discussion. Under the residential proposal, the higher rate would begin after monthly use reaches 12,000, 15,000 or 18,000 gallons, depending on the option. The city’s rate-structure materials list proposed prices of $6.45, $7.10 or $7.75 per 1,000 gallons for that tier. The first 6,000 gallons would remain at $3.75 per 1,000 gallons, with the next tier at $4.30.
