Wheat Ridge’s Planning Commission voted 5-0 on Oct. 15 to recommend changing city sign rules to allow up to four existing billboards along Interstate 70 to be converted to one-sided digital signs. The proposal would keep the citywide billboard total at 15; City Council still must approve the change. The meeting recording documents the vote and staff’s presentation of the proposal.
Under the proposal, digital billboards facing the same direction would need to be at least 2,500 feet apart. Staff said signs facing opposite directions could be closer together. If billboard companies could not agree on which locations to convert, they would have 30 days to negotiate before the city used a lottery to assign locations.
Staff also proposed requiring light-mitigation technology. One example uses louvers to direct a sign’s viewing cone toward the highway; staff said other systems could also meet the requirement.
