Reported Denver carjacking ends in crash; 17-year-old suspect in custody

A reported carjacking led to a police pursuit and crash near Colorado 7 and Washington Street Friday morning, and police took a 17-year-old male suspect into custody, according to police and local reports.

Denver police said in a Friday morning update that they were investigating a reported carjacking in which the victim remained inside the vehicle. The department did not identify either teenager or announce charges.

Police received the report at about 5:15 a.m. July 31 near West First Avenue and Wolff Street, according to The Denver Post. Officers found the vehicle roughly five minutes later and pursued it north on Interstate 25 because the victim was still inside, Denver7 reported.

The vehicle exited toward Colorado 7 and crashed near Washington Street at about 5:36 a.m., the reports said. The victim, a 17-year-old female, and the suspect were taken to a hospital. The Denver Post reported that the victim was believed to have serious injuries; other reporting initially said the teenagers’ conditions were unknown. No later public update on the victim’s condition was available by Friday night.

Police initially believed an argument preceded the incident and that the teenagers did not know each other, The Denver Post reported. The report also said there were no indications that weapons were involved. Those details remain part of the preliminary investigation.

Police have not publicly confirmed that the suspect was booked or that charges were filed. The investigation remains ongoing.
