Denver police arrest man after fatal hit-and-run near Sheridan and Hampden

Denver police arrested 40-year-old Nathan Eastman after a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a motorcyclist near Sheridan Boulevard and Hampden Avenue, but no formal criminal charges had been publicly confirmed as of the reporting cutoff.

Denver police said Eastman was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide — reckless conduct and leaving the scene of an accident involving death. The department said the Denver District Attorney’s Office would make the final charging determination.

The crash occurred Sunday, Aug. 9. The motorcyclist initially was reported to have suffered serious injuries but later died at a hospital, The Denver Gazette reported. Police said preliminary findings indicated the vehicle struck the motorcycle and fled; an unoccupied vehicle was found shortly afterward, the Gazette reported.

CBS News Colorado identified the victim as Maggie Martinez. Police did not identify the victim in their arrest announcement.

The official Denver Sheriff booking record identifies Eastman as Nathan Patrick Eastman, 40, and lists an Aug. 9 booking. It also lists Denver County Court case No. 26CR03938 and investigative holds for vehicular homicide under C.R.S. 18-3-106 and leaving the scene of an accident involving death under C.R.S. 42-4-1601(1),(2)(c).

The record shows an Aug. 10 court setting and an active case status, but does not display a filed complaint, formal counts or the hearing’s outcome. A review of the Denver District Attorney’s public website and the Colorado Judicial Branch’s publicly available docket results did not produce a case-specific filing or announcement by the reporting cutoff.

The available records support reporting Eastman’s arrest and investigative holds, but not that prosecutors have filed or declined to file final charges. Eastman is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
