Denver proposal would remove ShotSpotter coverage in Sun Valley, Park Hill

A proposed amendment to Denver’s SoundThinking gunshot-detection contract would remove 2.15 square miles of coverage — 0.5 square miles in Sun Valley and 1.65 square miles in Park Hill — and lower the contract maximum to $4,352,579.
The two areas generated a combined 178 ShotSpotter alerts in 2025: 55 in Sun Valley and 123 in Park Hill. The amendment projects $147,421 in annual subscription savings, including $35,000 from Sun Valley and $112,421 from Park Hill, the proposed agreement says.
The proposal would realign coverage based on the Denver Police Department’s review of alert patterns and operational priorities. It would preserve service in other areas, including North Area, Districts 1 and 4, Montebello, East Colfax, Downtown and Downtown Expansion, according to the department’s contract-amendment presentation.
The Health and Safety Committee approved the related resolution 6-0 on Sept. 2, with Councilmember Paul Kashmann absent, according to committee minutes. The measure was scheduled for Mayor-Council consideration by consent on Sept. 8, but that meeting was canceled, according to the Mayor-Council agenda.
The available materials do not confirm final City Council approval, mayoral approval, full execution of the agreement or implementation of the coverage changes. The filed resolution, identified as Resolution CR26-1217, has blank passage and signature fields, and the agreement says it will not become effective or binding until required city signatures are obtained and, if required by the Denver Charter, City Council approves it.
