Denver landmark commission recommends individual designation for The Stonehouse
The 1891 Capitol Hill home is already part of the East Seventh Avenue historic district; designation would bring city review for some permitted exterior projects.
Denver’s Landmark Preservation Commission voted unanimously Sept. 15 to recommend designating The Stonehouse, at 740 N. Washington St., as an individual landmark. The owners, Joe and Erika Dalya Massaquoi, applied for the designation, and Community Planning and Development staff recommended forwarding the proposal to City Council, the department’s staff report says.
The 1891 home is already a contributing property in the East Seventh Avenue historic district. The city’s application describes its Queen Anne features and its connection to architects Varian & Sterner.
Designation would not require city approval for every repair. Certain exterior projects requiring building or zoning permits, including alterations, additions and new construction, would undergo landmark design review, the city’s guidance explains.
The Community Planning and Housing Committee is scheduled to consider the proposal at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 29, according to its agenda. If the committee advances it, City Council would consider the designation.
