Broomfield City Council approved a $100,000 contribution toward Boulder County’s $2.7 million acquisition of Gateway Open Space at its Oct. 13 meeting. The council approved the agreement and conservation easement in a 10-0 vote on a group of consent items, according to the meeting recording and transcript.
The 72.2-acre property is in unincorporated Boulder County near South 96th Street and Dillon Road. Under the agreement, Boulder County will own and manage the property and pay its associated costs. City staff said the contribution secures a shared, permanent conservation easement with Louisville and Lafayette.
City staff estimate that counting the property would increase Broomfield’s share of public and private open lands from about 36% to 37% of its 40% goal, according to the City Council agenda packet.
Broomfield has no current obligation to pay for future improvements. Staff said any future participation would be optional and could be addressed in a later agreement. A management plan will consider possibilities such as a trail corridor, prairie-dog management and public access; the council’s approval did not authorize those improvements.
