Arapahoe County Public Health is asking county commissioners to consider adding a Vital Records office at Arapahoe Plaza, serving western Arapahoe and nearby counties. The proposed conversion of part of the space planned for Harm Reduction is estimated to cost $40,135 and add 10 calendar days to the project, but commissioners have not approved it.
The office would provide birth and death certificates to residents in western Arapahoe, Jefferson, Denver and Douglas counties. Public Health says it would fill a service gap between Golden and Centennial, with weekday appointments and walk-ins like those offered at the department’s Lima and Altura locations. The department’s proposal calls for a public-service counter, two workspaces and secure vault storage.
The change would also alter the planned Harm Reduction space. Under Public Health’s revised service model, the program would use street outreach, fixed-location sites and Prevention Point rather than occupy a dedicated space at Arapahoe Plaza. There, it would use storage and shared space at the sexual health clinic. Prevention Point would screen and test clients, referring those who screen positive to the clinic, the report says.
The $40,135 is an estimate; the final cost will depend on updated design drawings. County staff recommends using project contingency funds, though the report says those funds generally are reserved for unanticipated work within the original project scope. Staff says funds are currently available, but further unforeseen costs could require unallocated Capital Improvement Program funds.
The Board of County Commissioners is scheduled to discuss the project at an Oct. 20 study session. The agenda lists the item for study-session discussion, not an approval vote. Commissioners could decline the change or defer consideration of a western Vital Records office to the county’s facilities master plan.
